Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I join Chico Hillel?
Our group is super welcoming, inclusive and active! We embrace all things “Chico” and let students lead the way. Our organization is run by students for students. Our student interns are sophomores, juniors and seniors and work behind the scenes to create fun and interesting programs that members want to attend. Our goal is to create a FOMO* environment so that students don’t just say, “Sorry I missed it, I was blah, blah, blah” instead they are bummed that they were not able to attend.
Chico Hillel is a home away from home for our members. We have a cozy office near campus providing a family atmosphere conducive to student personal growth. Most of our students become college roommates and develop lifelong friendships. We travel together, hang out over the weekends, and carpool home during breaks and vacations. We learn from each other and can’t wait to show you the ropes of Chico!
Also worth mentioning, Chico Hillel offers opportunities to develop social, professional and life skills. Our interns learn leadership skills which build their professional resumes. Our members are encouraged to share their ideas and express their concerns. We know that you have things to teach us and have some ideas for events and programs that we would want to attend.

When are your weekly meeetings? Why Thursdays?
Our weekly meetings are every Thursday from 6:30-7:30pm following the campus schedule. We are closed during all breaks and summer.
We love to hang out and eat pizza.....especially tasty slices from the best pizza place in town, Celestino’s New York Pizza!!! We love our office! It is set-up like an apartment style living room with couches, a huge bean bag and comfy chairs. We listen to music, catch up on each other’s lives and enjoy the relaxation of the end of the week. Each Thursday offers a different theme and/or activity created by student interns. Some weekly themed examples are crafting with items like photos, candy, and art; hikes in Upper Bidwell, discussion on Kabbalah, movie and game nights along with American themed parties like pumpkin carving and tie dying! During the meeting we shout out campus announcements, fundraisers and other community events. We commonly offer special monthly programs and guest speakers during this time depending on the Jewish calendar and campus offerings. Please refer to our monthly calendar for upcoming events.
We meet on Thursdays because it is a social night. It is at the end of the week but not quite Shabbat. We have dinner together and can then go out downtown or to friend’s house afterward. During the months of April-September we go to the Chico Thursday Night Market after the meeting.

Do I have to be Jewish?
No way! We are a Jewish social club for students not a social club for Jewish students. We invite any student who is interested in learning more about Judaism, Israel or students who just love to eat! We invite all students who want to gather during our activities, events and programs whether you are Jew-curious, have Jewish roommates or are dating a Jew!! Come and hang out with our loving, friendly and FUN student organization and bring a friend or two!!
How Jewish is Chico Hillel? Like Jew-ish?
Chico Hillel empowers each individual to discover what being Jewish means within themselves. We cultivate a Jewish family experience with all students on campus. We are a tight knit group who loves and supports one another, but we are open to friends, roommates and any other curious visitors. We do not serve Kosher food but are respectful and do our best to offer food that more traditional Jewish students can eat.
Our members all have very different backgrounds with different levels of education in Judaism and most of them enjoy talking about family traditions over bagels! Many of our students come from interfaith families and celebrate more than one religious tradition. We are open- minded and love to hear the stories.

Does Chico Hillel advocate for Israel?
Yes, we are a pro-Israel organization! We educate students first by always stating that Israel is not perfect just like the United States. Then we start with sharing all of the wonderful things about Israeli culture, food, people and places. To handle the deep questions, concerns and debates, we bring in specialists. We partner with other knowledgeable organizations to share information, materials and promotional items. We invite professors to speak, welcome international guests and encourage students to attend, ask questions and get involved.
Chico Hillel connects students to Israel through networks of professionals, programs and opportunities. We lead trips on Birthright, send students on study abroad programs, and do everything we can to get students to Israel for travel, education and internships. We have participated in work projects in Israel to promote Tikkun Olam and Tzedakuh.
Currently, CSU Chico has no group advocating against any of our values. The CSU Chico campus community, students, staff and faculty provide a friendly environment for all of our students.
